We’re spreading the small business love this week with a list of our very own favorites. These are the places we go to when we need inspiration, a break, a treat. They make our lives better and our communities better and they’re one-of-a-kind. We’ve sent thank you notes to each of the them, because we want them to know that their work matters and is appreciated. Don’t forget to say “thanks!” to your own favorite small business this week or any week, and definitely share your staples in the comments below so that we can help spread the word.
Happy National Small Business Week!!!
Buttonwood Farm Ice Cream | Griswold, CT
In addition to the delicious ice cream and the beautiful setting, they spend 10 days every summer raising money for The Make a Wish Foundation. Last year they raised over $113,000 selling bouquets of sunflowers and hayrides.
I try to volunteer every summer to help bundle the sunflowers. That’s a photo of the supervisors up in the header. They like to tell the volunteers to “keep moooooving”! (Sorry, I couldn’t help it.)

Plum Deluxe | Portland, OR
Two things I love are tea and variety. One of my favorite small businesses, Plum Deluxe, helps me check off both of these boxes. With their tea of the month club, I get a new hand-crafted organic tea to try each month. Andy Hayes runs Plum Deluxe, and works with a team to hand pick and produce each tea. Each month is a truly unique and delicious experience.

POP! | Providence, RI
My favorite small business is POP. This store has an amazing selection of flea market and yard sale finds that the owner has collected over many years of travel. You can find vintage toys, books and furniture. They also sell records which are nicely grouped together in categories like “Records You Must Own”. The store is currently moving to a larger location in Providence. I’m looking forward to seeing the new space!

Back On the Rack | Denver, CO
This is the one small business that I’ve visited multiple times so far here in Denver. I love getting name brands for my daughter at prices that aren’t more than I spend on my own clothing.

The Elephant Tea Room | Cranston, RI
They have some super delicious crepes and teas available in a very comfy space. They are very nice and welcoming whether I’ve come in with 3 rowdy kids in tow for a quick bite while my car is getting an oil change across the street or I sit and nurse a pot of tea and work for a while with their free wi-fi.
I don’t get to visit as frequently as I’d like but they are currently my go to space for a nice slowed down cup of tea and minute to myself.

Ken’s Ramen | Providence, RI
Ken apparently started selling his soup out of the back of a van, which would seem to present difficulties on par with running a legit business. Lucky for us, that market test apparently revealed that Rhode Islanders will not tolerate a ramen-less capital a moment longer, praise be.
