This is the fourth in a series of blog posts celebrating National Small Business Week by naming those Batchbook customers who we feel have attained Superhero status because of the unflinching work they do to make the small business universe a better place.
Our story today recognizes a Batchbook customer who is a Superhero in the traditional, acts of untold bravery sort of way. But he is also our hero in the slogging it out like the rest of us mortals building a business one day at a time kind of way. Here’s his story.
Warren Macdonald is an environmentalist. He once traveled the world saving rainforests, but that’s not the heroic part of the story. While hiking in Australia many years ago, a sudden shift in a rock wall sent a one ton boulder crashing down on top of Warren’s legs, stranding him for two days while his hiking buddy went for help. He survived unimaginable pain and isolation, only to be rescued but have both legs amputated from above the knees. But I’m still not to the heroic part of the story.
As Warren said himself in an article in Fear.less magazine, “all the important stuff happened after the accident” and this is where I think Warren gets heroic. Yes, I’m sure relearning every single aspect of your daily routine is difficult, but building a livelihood for yourself and those around you based on sharing the lessons learned from a horrifying experience is truly heroic in our eyes. Warren has written a book, travels the world as a motivational speaker, continues with his partner to lead expeditions to the top of the world’s most challenging peaks and has been featured on some pretty impressive tv shows including being the subject of a show on The Discovery Channel. He continues to challenge himself to find new and better ways to share his message of strength and survival. Not one to rest on the amazing success he has had to date, he recently launched a new training program this year at The Solution Revolution.
We know the difficulties in starting a new business. Taking an idea out of the depths your overimagination and getting a few people to help you get it going. Finding customers to pay you something for what your are building and hopefully being able to pay those kind people to help you keep it going. Warren has an incredible story, but we think he is a hero because he’s made a profession out of finding and facing those giant, scary obstacles and helping all of us learn how to face them.
